Be the Change no. 34
“Your beliefs are your actions. What you say is just what you think.”
Be the Change.
Folks are easy to influence and manipulate. I know. Not you. BUT, yes you and me too. Just look around your InterWebs, listen to conversations, engage in small talk . . . folks want to be influenced into shortcuts to critical thinking. Principles and beliefs are secondary. Those things can change like socks. What is really important?
For most folks what is truly important is belonging. Whatever the leaders of the tribe say, then the congregation has to follow. There is a need for worship and in the place of religion these folks begin to worship the loudest voice. The most certain voice. The voice that echoes their message. Facts and rational thought be damned.
I like to question. I like to critically think. I like to look at motives. I guess I am just weird that way. BUT I am not going to just take someone’s word as if it were from the mouth of the Divine itself. I even question gospel and things written in stone. So, I am definitely going to question things typed or spoken. That is just my nature.
Folks want to talk about how things should change and then just go back to doing the same. And that is fine. Change is not coming from those folks. Change does not need them to be active participants. Those of us that are changing things need to just keep changing things. It will eventually catch up to them just like any change.
Twenty years ago folks campaigned on being against gay marriage. Twenty years ago folks campaigned against marijuana. And things change. Cultures change because we change the culture. And we need to continue doing our change. These changes did not occur because of the many doing soul searching and questioning their beliefs. These changes occurred because the many went along with the current. They rode the tide.
The few need to keep working on the path of the road and keep carving out the correct trail. The rest will follow. So, do not feel discouraged that your voice is small. Do not feel discouraged that your change is overlooked. Do not feel discouraged that you are misunderstood. The change will come as long as we commit to the change. Folks will come along for the ride.
