“People only show altruistic, benevolent, merciful, and kind attributes when it is in their benefit. People only show selfish, angry, spiteful, and mean attributes when it is in their benefit. Capitalism and corporatism is not inspiring the first. Governments are not inspiring the first. So, we need to look for something else that fosters these things we value and support those systems in order to create something new.”
Embrace the Within.
People are social creatures reacting emotionally to the world around them. As social creatures, people crave a sense of belonging and unity. Like doughnuts, they’re walking around with a hole that needs filled. I think the best way to fill that hole is through community.
We here the word community thrown around all over the place today. There are social, work, and business communities that strive to fill that hole that people crave filling. That hole of unity and connection. Looking to a workplace to fill your hole is not a great idea because we all know that we are replaceable whether we like to believe that or not. So I believe the best way to find community is out there in the community.
The best place to look is inside the nonprofit structure. Is it without its flaws? Of course not. There is still room for all the negative aspects of people I listed above but the key motivating factor in any nonprofit like most small business is cooperation. The idea of everyone working together for a set goal and taking pride in their achievements. Large corporations and governments try to build this sense of community but it easily breaks down into hierarchy that allows for those negative social aspects to flourish.
So, how do we move forward in fostering a community where these positive aspects can flourish? Obviously we don’t have that system yet but we do know what doesn’t work and that is everything we’ve tried so far. Communism, socialism, capitalism , corporatism, feudalism, republics, democracies, all have failed to bring about those positive aspects for a sustained amount of time. Even religious structures fail when they grow too big and become corrupt.
I think that we can take some of the lessons learned from shutting down the country and not forget them in a rush to get back to the way things were. Because the way things were wasn’t working. The way things are now worked better. Smaller groups, smaller goals, more cooperation, more positive interactions. When we get too many people together, it can be chaos with or without the threat of violence. So, I think we need to really consider thinking smaller.
I know I’m going to focus on building my community of people that want to take what’s inside of them and use that to control their life. I’m going to look for that next system on the small scale. We have seen the history of all large things falling but have failed to apply those concepts to society. People keep wanting to unify the county, the state, the country, the world but is that getting us unified? Is forcing people together allowing for diverse opinions or just one?
Then why the push for more? I’m going to focus on the small starting with the self. Maybe if we start embracing ourselves and what we can control, then we can build that new system? Maybe we can find something that works?
Find what works for you today? And I will keep working on what works for me as well.
I hope you find whatever you’re looking for. Have the day you want.
