Personal Meditation No. 78
"I can't believe we think we know what we're doing. A cursory observation proves that we're ill prepared to make complex decisions and minimally prepared for making minor decisions. Yet, here we are. It's a miracle."
Embrace the Within
Those of you suffering from Just World Bias and the Dunning-Kruger Effect already know where this is going. Even the Optimism Bias folks have a horse in this race as well. Well, we have every right to believe that way because science backs up that we’re not as smart as we think we are. But, in spite of all that, here we are. Here I am. Still working on figuring out how to get my mind to do the things I want it to do more easily, more efficiently, more harmoniously. And that takes practice.
I was just talking to my students yesterday about how you are your brain. Everything you’ve done, all you’ve learned, all you will ever be is in there. The other side to that is your brain is lazy. It wants to work as little and as efficiently as possible. So the brain makes the things we always do easier for us. It lines up our neurons so we can accomplish those goals without the brain having to do much.
So, that is why their brains hurt this week after coming back to school. This is why their bodies are tired this week after coming back to school. This is why their teachers are tired as well. Learning new things and lining up those neurons is exhausting. But, with continued practice of lining up those neurons, things get easier.
So keep practicing the way you want your brain to work. Your brain is going to fight you on this one because it doesn’t want to change. But you can get that brain into the shape you want.
I hope you find whatever you’re looking for. Have the day you want.
