Personal Meditation No. 61

“Leaders make others better by making themselves better.”

Embrace the Within.

During my four decades and change, I have watched a number of people in leadership roles and found myself in those positions as well. And I can honestly say that most people are not effective leaders. Most folks are rather adept at following. Very few folks are horrible at both.

The reason why so many people fail to be effective leaders is the same reason that people that gain quick wealth and fame lose both just as quickly, too much focus on self. Everyone is interested in their self. It is what allows us to survive, looking out for ourselves, however, to inspire those around you requires that you make choices that put the well-being of others over your own.

Look at parenting. Some folks really suck at being parents. They’re good at being friends, they’re good at being bossy, they’re good at providing for needs, but when it comes to putting the needs of their family, their children over their own needs, they fail. I am sure that you may see this in your life. Doing what is best for your family is a struggle for these folks for a variety of reasons that all come back to poor leadership.

An effective leader is numerous things and a variety of times. But one thing an effective leader is never is apathetic or detached. A leader doesn’t inspire folks by threats and force. A leader doesn’t enjoy being in charge. In fact, most leaders hate it.

I constantly repeat that if you see me leading something then you know everyone else has failed. I don’t want to lead anything. I am fully capable of doing so but I would rather someone else rise to the level. I really have nothing left to prove as a leader. I am more than content to sit back and let others lead as long as it is working. Once it doesn’t work, then I feel obligated to step forward for the good of the group. Not because I want the glory or the power, but simply because I do not want the group to fail.

Leaders ultimately want not only success for themselves but they want success for those around them. They are the biggest cheerleader and the harshest critic because they want success. Leadership leaves your ego at the door so that everyone can win.

As I’ve talked over the last few days, life is not a zero-sum game. Leaders understand that winning can be a team sport. Winning can elevate everyone. Winning can make the whole team better, even them.

I hope you find whatever you’re looking for. Have the day you want.
