Personal Meditation No. 50

"The problem isn't -isms. The problem is violence and that problem is still prevalent in our culture. We will fight, we will enslave, we will kill rather than allow others to live nonviolently."

Embrace the Within.

If one thing will make me speak more than all other things, then it is using violence as a solution to problems. There are times when you must meet violence with violence in order to protect your self, your property, and your freedom, but these instances are very few in societies today. But folks advocating for violence against their children, against their neighbors, against total strangers, these instances still exist and seem more prevalent thanks to our interconnection from social media.

And there are plenty of excuses created for advocating for violence that are typically rooted in mistakes made in the past or looking to correct behavior in the future. But there is little focus on the present. There is little focus on the self. There is little focus on choice.

If you have lived on this earth for more than two decades, then you might want to start taking responsibility for the choices you make. Blaming the way you were raised, where you were raised, and who raised you is a victim mentality. It is about time you take ownership for your own choices and stop blaming them on the external things you can’t control.

Going around in life throwing punches at obstacles is pointless because no matter how many obstacles you punch, there will still be more obstacles. The obstacles don’t disappear just because we hit them. The obstacles keep coming in spite of being hit. So, finding another way to deal with these obstacles can give us a more peaceful way at resolution.

So, I am growing tired of seeing people advocating for hitting their kids when they don’t listen. Children are not yours to control. Children are yours to teach. Children have their own body, their own mind, their own liberty. To acknowledge their humanity is to empower them and not belittle them.

I am growing tired of adults threatening to beat someone’s ass for talking about them or treating them poorly. People are going to do bad things despite your best intentions. That is their choice. You get to control your choice on how you deal with those people. Are you going to give them power of your decisions and actions? Are you going to enslave yourself to them? Or are you going to let them live their life and choose to live yours as well?

No one is making you angry. No one is making you hit them. No one is in control of your life. No one is making you do anything. It’s all you.

So, today start owning your choices? Start taking responsibility for your body, your mind, your freedom? Start being a person?

I hope you find whatever you’re looking for. Have the day you want.
