Personal Meditation No. 28
“You can be free every day. You just need to decide freedom is what you want.”
Embrace the Within.
The great summer of freedom is heading our way. And the folks peddling these ideas think you will fall for it again. Written decrees, feast days, graven images, false gods, and false prophets can make you no more or less free. You are being sold something you already possess. Something you already can choose.
Freedom takes something more than flags and fireworks. Freedom takes a little more than beers and barbeques. Freedom takes a little more than songs and sunshine.
Freedom takes courage. Freedom takes change. Freedom takes choice.
And although it’s easy to listen to a tune of American patriotism about the deeds of soldiers and drink from a beverage with Sky Cloth packaging while small explosions fill the night sky, freedom takes something more. Freedom isn’t indenturing yourself to corporations. Freedom isn’t enslaving yourself to elected overlords. Freedom isn’t standing or kneeling to a tune in reverence. Freedom is something more.
And I know you’ll get bombarded with these images to get out there and celebrate your freedom over the next month or two. But consider whether this packaged and marketed idea of freedom compares with true freedom. And consider what you need to surrender, need to sacrifice, need to lose for this version of freedom.
Freedom is not patriotism. Freedom is a little something more. Freedom is inside of you.
I hope you find whatever you’re looking for. Have the day you want.
