Personal Meditation No. 25
"Sometimes you're being told lies and other times you're lying to yourself but most times both are true."
Embrace the Within.
Unfortunately and unintentionally, I listened and watched some news over the past twenty-four hours. Hopefully you had a chance to listen to the Brain First podcast about detoxing your mind with the good Drs. Perlmutter or pick up the new copy of Influence by Robert Cialdini over the past few weeks because there is a lot to unpack all around. I even got an interesting listen to Pushkin’s new podcast on being antiracist with Ibram X. Kendi. All of these helped shape my reflections on the things I heard and saw on the news over the past twenty-four hours.
The news wants you to be afraid when the world is much different. I know it is difficult to believe that “news” is trying to influence you into being afraid but look at what it does. “News” reports the worst of humanity with some gleems of actual truth like weather and traffic. The stress “news” puts on your body doesn’t end when the program ends or you stop watching. That fear and stress goes with you and then you’re talking to your coworker or friend or relative or stranger about the “news” that is very disturbing. Living a life that is constantly stressed is exhausting and unhealthy. Even the “news” we get on social media can do the same things. Click bait headlines for articles folks don’t read and just repost can stress us as well. When the facts are much different.
Most of us aren’t violent offenders. Most of us are civilized enough to not act like children when we don’t get our way. Most of us don’t steal. Most of us go along and get along. Most of us, despite our unhealthiness of body and mind, can still function somewhat rationally in a world filled with stress and fear. I just wonder how much better it would be if we were actually healthy and stress free?
So, how can I get healthy and stress free? What’s the magic cure? Do I need a pill? Do I need a drink? Do I need a subscription? Do I need a new messiah? Nope. It’s all on you.
If I could give you three recommendations to get healthy, I would give them to you. One thing I would recommend is getting out into nature. Another thing I would recommend is avoiding the news and its stress as much as possible. And the final thing I would recommend is eating foods you can identify as food and not something processed.
If you start embracing the beauty and the light of the natural world, fill your mind with positive and grateful thoughts, and fill your body with natural food, then you will be on the path to reclaiming your greatness. The majority of causes of death in this country are from poor diet choices. Courage is choosing to change. Your body, your mind, your life will thank you. I hope you find whatever you’re looking for. Have the day you want.
