Personal Meditation No. 148
“Your beliefs are your actions. What you say is just what you think.”
Embrace the Within
One of the main controlling behaviors behind cult systems is the idea of submission. The idea of questioning the leadership of a system is seen as preposterous and absurd. The leaders are given a level of elite status as their knowledge is beyond question. A lot of these leadership roles are passed on through lines of succession by association rather than heredity. These leaders are special individuals that are greater than the rest of the membership. Since these leaders are special and are granted special knowledge, the membership is more trusting and psychologically primed to count on these leaders for their welfare. This could be emotional, physical, or other welfare as far down as basic needs like food, shelter, and clothing.
As membership increases their submission to the leadership, the members are rewarded with additional responsibilities for keeping the leadership in power, roles to keep the system safe, and/or praises from the leadership for their continued submission. These responsibilities, roles, and praises increase the feeling of importance in the membership and increases their dependence on the group.
These behaviors are seen in a variety of systems both private and government, both religious and secular, both populist and progressive, both liberal and conservative, all are ultimately authoritarian systems rather than egalitarian or voluntary. Having the free ability to leave the membership of these groups without the threat or fear of repercussions separates these cults from voluntary systems. So, if you fear what might happen if you speak up to leadership for fear, then your system is one that is controlling and seeking your submission. And a free person is not in that situation. A submissive, controlled person is now in place in the system.
So, consider the systems embrace. Are you in control or are you being controlled? Are you free or are you submissive?
