Personal Meditation No. 5
“My freedom doesn’t require your freedom; why must your enslavement require mine?” Embrace the Within.
I had a rough patch a few years ago. I used to think that I was out there preaching the gospel. I was out there converting the masses. I had seen the light and I was going to show everyone the errors of their ways. I was going to show them how they were think irrationally. I was going to convert them to libertarian thought. I was going to save the world one person at a time.
I thought it was my obligation to help them. And for that I am still carrying the label of troll because I was looking to prove that my thoughts were rational, were better, were superior.
I was wrong in my tactics. I was wrong in trying to free my friends, I was wrong in trying to free my family, I was wrong in trying to free my community. The only person I ever needed to free, the only person I ever could free, was myself.
You see I was encumbered by the idea that I was responsible for spreading the good news. I was encumbered by some social obligation I thought existed. I was encumbered by hubris in thinking I could change someone else. I sit here today knowing that was all ego.
Some of you have your own truth that you’re out there beating the world to death with. You’re out there bludgeoning people with how smart you are. You’re out there beating people with how right you are. You’re out there trying to be a Tubman and lead a people out of bondage with a gun. Don’t force it. You see I was violating the non-aggression principle in my actions of attempting to force people to agree, to think, to change. And about a year ago I realized that was pointless. It was as pointless as voting your way to freedom. As pointless as changing the system to achieve freedom. As pointless as looking anywhere external to find freedom.
Freedom is the struggle of the individual. Some of us want to be free and we’re going to achieve that freedom. A lot of us want to enslave everyone else in the same rut with us. If you’re looking to change, if you’re looking to learn, if you’re looking to be free, then you’re going to have to start embracing what’s in you and stop being concerned with all the white noise.
If you’re looking to change, then you can know I am out there changing with you. But, it doesn’t take enslavement or freedom of anyone else but you.
I hope you find whatever you’re looking for. Have the day you want.
