“It may not be your fault BUT it is still your problem.”

Embrace the Within.

Last night was something. We went to see Charlotte and her school’s performance of Tom Sawyer The Musical and right after intermission everyone’s phones started going bonkers for tornado watch announcements. We made it through the performance with only minor distractions and the kids did great. When I got home with Python, that was when the work began in the dark of night. First there were the multiple limbs down in the driveway that I had to clear before anyone else tried to drive home. Then there were the greenhouses that were lifted and moved by the wind. I had unfastened my two small greenhouses last week to get the plants more space in the sun without the added heat of confinement. Then there was the swamp created by the rain in the chicken run. And finally the tree limb that broke the wire fencing free at one corner of the run. So, there I was last night with Sophia holding a flashlight and me holding another flashlight and a staple gun fixing the problem before another deluge came through.

But the work had to be done or it wasn’t going to get doen. I could have waited until this morning. Kept the chickens inconvenienced and in the coop all day. I could have just driven over the branches and done damage to my car and let them damage the vehicles of the rest of my family. I could have chosen that it wasn’t my problem. That it was too much work. And that someone else would handle it.

And I think a lot of times, most folks really want things to not be their problem. What do I say around here? It may not be your fault but it is still your problem. I didn’t bring down the branches. I didn’t break the fence. I didn’t move the greenhouses. It wasn’t my fault. BUT it was still my problem. I still had to put in the work. Even though I was tired. Even though it was dark. Even though it was a swampy mess. Even though more storms were coming. The work had to be done. And in a few minutes I am going to go out and see the actual damage around here. No plants or animals seemed to be adversely impacted as I walked the plantation last night, however, another storm rolled through while I was finishing up the repairs. So, when the sun starts to rise, I will take a better look at where that limb came from and what else needs to get worked.

There are always going to be problems in our lives. The beauty of the challenges and the problems and the obstacles are that we get to decide how we handle them. We can ignore the problems. We can wait out the problems. We can handle the problems. We can let someone else handle the problems. We get to choose.

Bless your heart. Have the day you want. I hope you find whatever you’re looking for.

“That’s just too much work.”

Embrace the Within.

It’s a lot of work. Waking up daily and working out is too much work. Eating real food is a lot of work. Growing your own food is a lot of work. Drinking a gallon of water is a lot of work. Raising livestock is a lot of work. Raising children is a lot of work. Having a partner is a lot of work. Being friends is a lot of work. Working a job is a lot of work. Being a Christian is a lot of work. Doing the right thing is a lot of work. Being alive is a lot of work. And if you are like me and you want to change and be better every day, what you are noticing is what makes all the difference is your life is putting in the work. When you put in the work, you will see results.

If you think things are too much work, then you are correct. We make time for what we value. Our actions are what we believe. I could sit over here all day telling you what I think BUT if I never went out there and planted seeds, if I never went out there and changed my routine, if I never went out there and changed my life, then what’s the use? Why even get up and pretend? Whe even sit here and type every day? I could be laying in bed hitting the snooze button. I could be drinking a pot of coffee to get going. I could be eating something chock full of sugar to get me energy. I could be grumbling my way out the door for a lengthy commute. I could be in a horrible mood and in terrible health. I can choose that just as easily as you can choose that mind set, that journey, that existence. Because it is simply existing with very little joy.

BUT I enjoy putting in the work because I enjoy feeling alive. I used to be a victim of everything around me. I could blame Bush, Obama, Trump, Biden, my neighbor, or anyone else for my problems. There are plenty of places to point fingers because there are plenty of folks doing the wrong thing. Billions of folks out there making the world miserable. Billions of folks out there living a sucky life. Billions of folks that could be happy. Billions of folks that could find meaning. Billions of folks that are not ready to put in the work.

BUT I am ready to put in the work. You are ready to put in the work. And that is all that is important. It doesn’t matter that inflation is out of control. It doesn’t matter that the world is a mess. It doesn’t matter that a new disease is out there looking to kill you. It doesn’t matter that folks are making new laws. It doesn’t matter that the world is against you. What matters is that you and I are ready to put in the work. We are ready to make the change. We are ungovernable. We have no limits. We want to live abundantly and joyfully despite what the world wants for us. We want to change. And all we need to do is commit to the change and work the plan.

Living the life you want to live is a lot of work. It’s not going to be easy. It’s work. BUT if you want something, if you really believe something, if something is important to you, then you make the time for that. You change your schedule to accommodate that. You change your life to incorporate that. Your actions will show what you value.

Bless your heart. Have the day you want. I hope you find whatever you’re looking for.
