“It’s not all in your mind but if you don’t control your mind, then the rest doesn’t matter.”

Embrace the Within

Our mental health in this country is constantly besieged. A lot of times our mental health is under attack from the systems that claim to care about our mental health. BUT the numbers are staggering, the CDC guesses that 20% of adults and they guess that the same rate exists in children as well. And it is no wonder with the amount of fear and anxiety that fills all the media around us we consume. And the answers are usually to dose or self-medicate your way into not dealing with the root cause of the illness.

I had been self-medicating for years. It’s a tough process that keeps reinforcing itself with your poor choices feeding other poor choices. Rather than work on getting myself healthy, like many other folks I took the easy answer and just poured some alcohol on top of it. All the while making myself feel worse mentally and physically. And there are plenty of outlets and advertisements for poor choices all around us. I wouldn’t be surprised if the actual number of people in this country dealing with a mental health problem is over half of the entire population.

Look at what we’re being fed as healthy? You can’t eat the majority of what passes for food in this country. It’s all processed into something that is just a sugar cake. Our food addiction in this country is another addiction to work on fixing. And you have to work on it yourself. There are plenty of folks out there talking about the changes to make like Dr. David Perlmutter and Cynthia Thurlow BUT you have to make the changes yourself.

You and I both have to decide to stop making the poor choices . . . No matter how easy the poor choices are. Eating foods that look like food. Whole food taken from a garden or a farm rather than something created in a lab and processed to make you crave its flavor.

And I’m not going to get healthy, you’re not going to get healthy, if we don’t work on what we’re eating first. That is the first step to getting back your mental health. Your brain can only work with the food you give it. And if you I keep feeding myself, you keep feeding yourself junk and pills rather than real food and exercise then we’re not going to change.

You can’t change doing the same things you did yesterday. Courage is choosing to change. And that change is going to take courage because the choices are not popular. The choices are under attack all around you. The choices are not easy.

But there is a benefit from making the decision to live healthy. There is a benefit in looking to nature to heal what society has broken. There is a benefit in eating foods from nature and not from a lab. There is a benefit to you and me. I am going to choose to control my mind and not switch it off. I am going to choose to change.

Have the day you want. I hope you find whatever you’re looking for.

“It’s not all in your mind but if you don’t control your mind, then the rest doesn’t matter.”

Embrace the Within

I am looking forward to getting to be a full time gardener and caretaker to animals over the next two weeks. It is so much simpler. I won’t have to squeeze everything in during the few hours of daylight that remain when I return from work. This is going to be a great time.

There will also be more time devoted to decluttering the study and organizing the volumes in piles around the table. File folders a plenty will be employed to get this mess under control and cataloged. Some cleaning and simplifying are definitely on the agenda as well.

I hope you’re making plans as this year comes to a close. Maybe doing some reflection on where you are and where you want to go. Finding your purpose and working on achieving that purpose. The end of the calendar year does bring our minds to this idea of ending one chapter and starting something new. BUT every day can give us that renewal as well.

We can wake up and be grateful for what we have and start visualizing what we want next. We can wake every day to the hope and promise of making better choices and moving toward our goals. I wake up that way every day. I wake up with a routine that allows me to get into the flow of being me.

So, I hope you enjoy the next few weeks as much as I am going to enjoy the next few weeks. I hope you find time for yourself, for reflection, and for renewal.

Have the day you want. I hope you find whatever you’re looking for.
