“It’s not all in your mind but if you don’t control your mind, then the rest doesn’t matter.”
Be the Change.
I used to be caught in the games of hating external things and hating other people. I got really angry that folks wouldn’t change. That folks couldn’t see the problems around them. That folks just couldn’t, in my mind, get it.
Well, there are many things I can change about myself from back then BUT still nothing I can change about those things and those people. I have indirect or direct control of less than half of the things in my life. And I have direct control of only one person. Once I got that understanding, then a lot of things simplified because I was making life too complicated.
I was trying to organize and micromanage everyone else while I only had direct responsibility and direct control over me. And that me was definitely not as organized and well-managed as he needed. That’s the part I am now working toward . . . organizing and bettering me. And I am not going to get there looking to control the actions of others. I am only getting there by taking back control of what little bit of my life I can.
Everyday is a day for me to choose to take control of my life. I can choose to wake up and work out mentally and physically. I can choose to drink my salt water. I can choose to eat whole foods. I can choose to plant seeds. I can choose to raise my own food. I can choose to read more and take notes. I can choose to speak what I know. I can choose to judge less and empathize more. I can choose to show the people I love compassion and understanding. I can choose to make myself better. I can choose to gauge my progress against my past self and not others. I can choose to make the little slice of earth I call home a better place. I can choose all those things.
And, in the end, those means make up the end I want. Without the correct means, the ending is unimportant. I am not working towards a plot twist, however, I am working on a more complete story, a better journey, a changing world. And I can only get there by changing myself. There are a lot of folks that want to save the world BUT can’t be bothered to clean the dishes, sweep their floors, do the chores, put in the daily work. You have to show up for practice and every day is a chance to put those changes into practice. Quite soon those practices become a routine and that routine becomes a way of life.
What are you practicing?
Have the day you want. I hope you find whatever you’re looking for.
