“The things you think about determine the quality of your mind.”
― Marcus Aurelius, Meditations
Courage is choosing to change.
Changing your thoughts is important to changing your health. You can’t have a healthy mind if you’re fueling that mind with garbage. Your mind will become garbage as well. So, most importantly, you have to be conscious of what you’re using to fuel that mind.
Once you get into the practice of fueling yourself healthily, then you can start improving the quality of your mind. Just like the food you eat, the thoughts you consume determine your mental health.
You have to choose what is going to fuel your mind. Are you going to think the same thoughts? Are you going to listen to the same thoughts? Are you going to settle into a rut of thought? Just as your body needs exercise to train the muscles to work property, your mind needs to exercise thinking so it can think properly. I like to think of it as natural science.
We understand that poor nutrition and lack of exercise is detrimental to our physical fitness but we often overlook the impact of poor nutrition and lack of exercise for our mental fitness. In this frame I’m not talking about physical exercise for your mind but mental exercise.
Mental exercise requires thinking differently. You cannot approach things the same and expect different results. You have to use your mind to examine the world around you. Examine your choices. Examine your beliefs. Examine your dogma. Examine your truth. You can’t get there consuming canned news, processed propaganda, and enriched advertisements. You must regulate your consumption and even remove the drive-thru thoughts. Kick those addictions to the sweet and salty taste centers of your brain that keep you addicted to your chamber of echoes.
Locate the produce section of thoughts filled with nature’s beauty and whole goodness. Load up on the nutrients of life. Soak in the truth of the sun. Breathe in the glory of freedom. Get out there and think a thought. Make it your own thought? Make it your own idea? Make it your own choice?
