Aurelius Meditation No. 1

“If you are distressed by anything external, the pain is not due to the thing itself, but to your estimate of it; and this you have the power to revoke at any moment.”

― Marcus Aurelius, Meditations

Courage is choosing to change.

There are a lot of people out there lashing out rather than working on change. And I have to accept that fact of life. Some people are rude. Some people are assholes. Some people are horrible. Some people are even immoral. That is their choice.

I get to choose as well. I get to choose how I meet their rudeness, their assholeness, their horribleness, their immorality. I can become as them or I can continue being me.

So, rather than getting distressed by name-calling and division and ignorance, I had to realize that I find it amusing, humorous, and base.

So if you’re working on change and you feel abused by the world around you for the person you are, remember that you can’t change the world all at once. The revolution occurs in each person and not in the masses. So, fight your revolution and let others make their choices.

I wandered around lashing out prior to making my purge here and during my process. I was fighting against all these external forces that ultimately were unimportant to my internal battle. I needed to get myself healthy before I could have a destination. And having a goal is important. You will find a lot of people are out there wandering just like I was. Maybe even just like you are. Until you have a goal, you can wander any path and get where you’re going. But when you have a destination in mind, then you get a purpose for your travels.

I hope you find that destination and work on getting there. Don’t let the struggles of others influence your path. Embrace the Secret Within? I hope you find whatever you’re looking for.
