Pappaconstantinou Meditation No. 1
“Do you ever look lover to your left?”
Sandee Wood Pappaconstantinou
Courage is choosing to change.
There are a lot of things to say about driving. Driving is a rite of passage in this country. Driving is a cultural expectation in this country. But driving is also dangerous and deadly. You have to drive the car rather than the car driving you.
And I can see a lot of metaphors and parables in this analogy. The idea that the body is your vehicle is the first one that comes to mind with this quote You see, I don’t look to my left when driving unless I’m going there. Move the head and the body will follow? If I’m looking to my left, then I’m changing lanes. I’m checking to make certain someone else isn’t in my blind spot. People like to sit in your blind spots.
So, looking to see if someone is just sitting there is important before you move left. But, I like to look where I’m going. When I get into my car I have a distinct destination in mind. I have a path to get there.
My goal as the driver is to look for obstacles and hazards. My goal as the driver is to navigate to that destination and return safely home. My goal as the driver is to protect myself from the carelessness of others.
If you don’t have a destination, if you don’t have a purpose, if you don’t have a goal, then any road will get you somewhere. But if you have a destination, a purpose, a goal, then you need to be deliberate about the roads you travel. You need to be deliberate about looking for hazards. You need to be deliberate in arriving at your destination.
So, look where you’re going in your car? Have your destination in mind? And get there safely today? Get there safely every day? I hope you find what you’re looking for.
