Biblical Meditations no. 2

“For you, my brothers, were called to freedom; only do not let your freedom become an opportunity for the sinful nature (worldliness, selfishness), but through love serve and seek the best for one another.”

Embrace the Word.

Life in America is always understood in terms of freedom. The term gets thrown around and debated and argued and misunderstood. Folks have all sorts of misconceptions about what it takes to become free, what it takes to remain free, and how much control they have over the freedoms of others. And this verse does a wonderful job in simplifying the purpose of freedom.

In my time in the liberty community, I have been around a lot of conversations about freedom. And a lot of those conversations about selfish reasons for wanting freedom. Folks want freedom to own something or to act some way. Folks want freedom for themselves and their own selfish ends. There are also some folks out there that want freedom for others. These folks want everyone to be able to become free if they choose freedom. And that is the kind of freedom we should all possess.

A freedom that isn’t about what is best for now BUT what is best for forever. I see a lot of folks that are after freedom to only embrace their basest emotions and natures. They want freedom to be violent to themselves and the world around them. And that is not what we see in this epistle.

Our true freedom comes in service to others. I am never more free than when I am doing my best to help another. When I use my freedom to love, when I use my freedom to serve, when I use my freedom to seek the best for another, then I am truly using my freedom the way God intends. My freedom is not enslavement of myself to my carnal or temporal pleasures. My freedom is in service of the eternal love and truth.

So, take some time today to examine your freedom. What am I using my freedom to achieve? Is my freedom just to get me the life I want? Is my freedom to show the love God wants?

I hope you find the time to share your love, your service, your best today. Have the day you want.
