“Do external things distract you? Then make time for yourself to learn something worthwhile; stop letting yourself be pulled in all directions. But make sure you guard against the other kind of confusion. People who labor all their lives but have no purpose to direct every thought and impulse toward are wasting their time-even when hard at work.”
Embrace the Meditations of Marcus Aurelius.
Distractions abound today even more than in the days of Aurelius. We carry our personal distraction around with us. Sometimes we let that little screen pull us in all sorts of directions. We allow the screen to make us sad, we allow the screen to make us happy, we consider the screen a friend, we consider the screen an adversary, we have many directions to turn from that one tiny screen.
But, we have other types of confusion to guard against as well. We can also lack direction. Maybe the screen isn’t a distraction from our purpose, maybe we lack a purpose to our life. That lack of purpose can make life an even more difficult task than life already is.
Even though we’re putting in work, doing the work, a lack of a destination is a waste. What is your purpose? What is your goal? What is your destination?
I hope you find whatever you’re looking for. Embrace the journey?
