“Far over the misty mountains cold
To dungeons deep and caverns cold
We must away, ere break of day,
To find our long-forgotten gold.”
Embrace the Hero Within.
One of the things that always sticks out in my mind when reading The Hobbit are the songs. In the beginning of the novel we have the songs of the dwarves. This stanza helps set the plot of the narrative with the use of song. And I think that’s quite a smart way to go about exposing the reader to the plot without beating them over the head. A sort of finesse that Tolkein uses to set the tone and direction of the story.
I mean I could go without rhyming cold with cold. That’s a little too Doors for me but, whatever. The songs of the dwarves in the beginning of the novel are truly unique in their purpose. So, you get credit for that, Tolkein, even though the rhymes are weak.
